Training in Employment Law

Is it enough to see that your Human Resource professionals have sufficient training in employment law?

No!

Certainly the HR folks should be the ones to consult if there is a problem because they have the most experience in this field. But problems begin with managers who operate outside the HR department. These are the managers who need to be aware when their behavior risks stepping over the line of legal treatment of employees.

All managers should know how to keep records that will hold up in court. They need to know that to let go of an employee legally, they must consult with HR well beforehand and follow strict, legal procedures. They need to know that giving inaccurate performance reviews—even those that are falsely flattering—can have negative consequences. They need to know that if there is even a hint of harassment, this should be reported immediately through the proper channels.

Only through effective training in employment law will your managers be educated to the risks to them and to the company of improper handling of employee issues.
